Frequently asked questions

How is the monthly car payment calculated?

The amount financed is the itemized purchase cost (car, sales tax, title and registration fees, shipping and anything else) minus your down payment and your trade-in equity, which is the trade-in value minus whatever you still owe on it. That amount is spread over the term at the APR using the standard amortization formula: a fixed payment where early months are mostly interest and later months mostly principal.

Do extra payments on a car loan save money?

Yes. Anything you pay above the scheduled payment goes straight to principal, so every later month charges interest on a smaller balance. The calculator shows exactly how many months an extra monthly amount or a one-time lump sum knocks off the loan and how much interest it avoids; there is no prepayment penalty on most auto loans, but check yours.

What does it mean to be upside-down on a car loan?

You are upside-down, or underwater, when you owe more than the car is worth. It is common in the first years of a loan with little money down, because the car loses value faster than the balance falls. Open this calculator from any car page and it overlays that model's real depreciation curve on your loan balance to show the months you would be underwater and when you break even.
